TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Here and Around

If you're staying outside the Boulevard Ring, the best way to get to the Kremlin/Red Square area is to take the metro to one of the following stations: Ploschad Revolyutsii, Alexsandrovsky Sad, Borovitskaya, or Teatralnaya. If you're closer in, it's a pleasant walk to this central circle of the city, especially if you're coming from the north (you have to cross traffic-heavy bridges if walking up from the south). Many of the surrounding neighborhoods are easily walked to from here as well; the metro is advisable only if you’re traveling more than a few stops.

Timing

Plan to spend half a day, at the very least, touring the Kremlin; budget a full day or more if you want to linger at the museums. The Kremlin grounds and cathedrals are open 10 to 5 every day except Thursday. The Armory Chamber and Diamond Fund are also closed on Thursday. Note that the Kremlin occasionally closes on other days for official functions. Check with your hotel concierge.

If you don't want to tackle all of this solo, you should consider a tour of the Kremlin grounds, which includes the Armory Chamber, available from virtually any tour service in Moscow. Plan to come back in the evening, when Red Square and its surrounding buildings are beautifully illuminated.
